Rep. Terri Leo Wilson recently shared her experiences and reflections on Juneteenth celebrations via a series of tweets. Her posts highlighted the significance of the events she attended and her personal involvement in commemorating this historic day.
On June 19, 2025, Rep. Terri Leo Wilson tweeted about attending a celebration at McKinney Memorial United Methodist Church, expressing gratitude to the City of La Marque for hosting the event. She wrote, “It was a wonderful celebration of the enduring legacy of Juneteenth last night at McKinney Memorial United Methodist.” The gala featured Living Rodeo Legend Harold Cash and local country artist Caleb James.
In another tweet posted shortly after, Rep. Wilson reflected on being recognized as a “Vanguard of Juneteenth,” describing it as a highlight moment in her life. She stated, “It was a great privelage to be recognized last night as a ‘Vanguard of Juneteenth’ and it will be a highlight moment in my life.” Additionally, she mentioned presenting a proclamation to the City of Galveston acknowledging the 160th anniversary since news of emancipation was delivered there.
Later that day, Rep. Wilson emphasized Galveston’s historical importance by marking it as both the birthplace of Juneteenth and its official designation as “the Juneteenth Capital of Texas.” In her tweet, she stated, “Today we commemorate the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth in Galveston — the birthplace of our nation’s newest federal holiday and now, officially, the Juneteenth Capital of Texas.”
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th to honor the announcement made in Texas regarding freedom from slavery following President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued two years prior.
