GALVESTON – Most bars and restaurants were operating as normal on March 17 on Galveston Island and throughout the county, but later that day amusement parks, museums and bars were ordered to close in the city.
Galveston Mayor Jim Yarbrough ordered the shut down, which was followed up by a second order that limited restaurants to take-out and delivery only to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Hotel restaurants will still be able to serve guests only. The order also closes bars.
Attractions on the island such as Moody Gardens and Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, which bring in 7.2 million tourists a year, will be closed. But Galveston does't need visitors during a time when residents and businesses are practicing social distancing.
“Playtime is over,” Yarbrough said.
Yarbrough made his announcement after a second case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the county.
A man between 45 to 50 was confirmed to have tested positive for the coronavirus by Galveston County Health District. The individual hasn't recently traveled or come in contact with someone with the virus that he knows of. The health district said this means it could be a sign of community spread of COVID-19.
Other counties in the area are also closing business and restaurants as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommended gatherings of over 10 people be avoided. Judge Lina Hidalgo ordered bars and restaurants in Harris County to either close or move to take-out and delivery for 15 days.
“We want to send a message that we’re trying to protect our people,” Yarbrough said.
