Galveston and Texas City have received $9 million in federal transportation grants to help overcome the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Daily News reported Galveston was awarded $4.7 million, while Texas City was awarded $4.3 million.

The grants are to be used to help fund public transportation systems that have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in the statement that the money had to go to things related to public transit.

The U.S. Department of Transportation was allocated $25 billion to provide to states by the CARES Act, which was signed into law by President Donald Trump on March 27.

“This historic $25 billion in grant funding will ensure our nation’s public transportation systems can continue to provide services to the millions of Americans who continue to depend on them,” Chao said.
