The City of Galveston will begin the application process for a rental assistance program aimed at assisting those significantly impacted by COVID-19.

The city will accept applications through Aug. 19. The funding is available through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for low-income families and individuals. Qualified applicants will receive funds in the form of a three-month rental compensation.

The program pays up to 100% of costs related to renting, security deposits and utilities.

The City of Galveston says this program will get residents on their feet amid the financial hardship due to the reduction or loss of income due to the coronavirus crisis. Officials say the program allows for back rent and utilities originally due on or after June 1, 2020.

To receive funds, applicants must present documentation showing their financial impact due to the loss of income after March 13. Additionally, qualified applicants must be legal residents or citizens of the U.S. and they must live in Galveston City. Their income must not exceed HUD-specified income limits.
