Effective property tax rate in Galveston County outpaced the national average in Q4 2022

Property owners in Galveston County paid 2.3% of the value of their homes in property taxes in the fourth quarter of 2022, which is more than 2.1 times the national average, according to the real estate analysis posted by the South Galveston News.

The median sales price of a Galveston County home in the fourth quarter of 2022 was $152,030, based on data from the 1,059 properties sold during that time. In 2018 the median tax bill for the county was $3,478, which is 2.3% of the median value of the homes that were taxed.

This is 2.1 times higher than the average effective property tax rate of 1.11% in the U.S. in 2023.

The analysis of Galveston County real estate data showed homeowners in League City, Dickinson, and La Marque paid the highest rates.
