Galveston College issued the following announcement.

In today’s world, technically challenging and high-paying jobs in the petrochemical industry continue to be held by men. Organizers of the fifth annual Women in Industry Conference at Moody Gardens on March 20 seek to change the trend.

The one-day conference will feature women who work in industrial skills-based jobs, as well as representatives from companies such as ExxonMobil, Worley, BASF, Chevron Phillips and Shell. Ikesha Williams of ExxonMobil will be the keynote speaker.

Vera Lewis-Jasper, dean of technical and professional education at Galveston College, said conferences such as the Women In Industry Conference can be a life-changing experience for women who have interests and talents ideal for technical trades.

The conference has grown each year and this year expects more than 1,250 attendees.

In addition to high school and college students, women ready to work or considering changing their careers are strongly encouraged to attend.

This year’s conference will again include a demonstration area where women can experience using a welding simulator, assembling an electrical circuit or operating a forklift, said Beth Cassidy, director of workforce development at Brazosport College.

With the reality of an aging workforce, plant expansions and new construction, Gulf Coast contractors and refineries are looking to hire women. Many of the professions have been identified as high demand and high growth in the Gulf Coast region.

While the conference expects to sell out, registration is open at www.womeninindustryconference.com.
