One of the nation’s largest university systems made the extraordinary decision to cancel its May commencement ceremonies.
The Texas A&M system said in a March 17 news release that spring graduation ceremonies are canceled to meet recommended gathering sizes to avoid spreading COVID-19.
“The university is planning mail delivery of diplomas to graduates,” university officials said in the statement, “and is also considering opportunities for in-person ceremony options later this summer for those May graduates wishing to do so.”
The university will waive shipping costs to mail diplomas. It plans to conduct its August graduation ceremonies as normal.
As news spread about Texas A&M postponing its spring graduations, NASA confirmed a “limited amount of employees” tested positive for the coronavirus and as a result required non-mission-essential employees and contractors to telework.
“Although a limited [number] of employees have tested positive for COVID-19,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement, “it is imperative that we take this pre-emptive step to thwart further spreading of the virus among the workforce and our communities.”
