Galveston ISD was awarded approximately $2 million by the Moody Foundation to purchase computers and other devices.
The computer devices will go toward the Generation Moody Education Initiative, which aims to provide all students and teachers with a laptop or computer and internet access at home, according to the Moody Foundation. The award to GISD will also include 1,200 Wi-Fi hotspots for the district.
“With the closure of schools and switch to remote learning, COVID-19 has further exposed some gaping and stark realities, one being educational inequities,” Ross Moody, trustee of the Moody Foundation, said. “One of the goals for Generation Moody is to help every student ... by removing barriers to success.”
One barrier to success is internet accessibility. The foundation is removing this barrier by ensuring all students and teachers in the school district have access to internet at home.
“The Moody Foundation recognizes the digital divide extends beyond computers and laptops; it’s also about internet connectivity,” Moody said. “To provide equitable solutions for all students, we have to level the playing field. This will not only improve their present academic performance but also their future impact to society.”
